As this cooking technique expanded to other parts of America, people experimented with other systems. Somewhere along the line, the name changed to BBQ. It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that people started calling the structure a grill. Today, the terms are used as a noun to classify the framework and as a verb to refer to the act of cooking.

In 1897, Ellsworth B.A. Zwoyer received a patent for charcoal briquettes. However, this source of fuel did not become popular until 1921 when E.G. Kingsford collaborated with Henry Ford to produce charcoal briquettes from scraps and sawdust. However, when the wind blew, the blocks left the food coated with ashes.

Nearly 30 years later (1952), George A. Stephen came up with the idea to cut a metal buoy in half to keep the wind from stirring up the fire. He added legs to one-half of the sphere to hold fire and a handle and vents to the other half to make a lid. The food rested on a grate between the two.

In 1954, the Chicago Combustion Corporation produced the first gas-powered portable grill. Until then, the company, under the leadership of its founder Louis McGlaughlin, manufactured gas burners for commercial use. His son, Don came up with the idea to use propane cylinders to make the grills portable. The grill was marketed and sold as the Lazy Man.
