How does a metal detector work?
A metal detector is a highly complex instrument designed to detect metal. There are mainly two different measuring methods that are used in the devices, and each has very specific advantages and properties.
The pulse induction technique (PI technique) is based on the principle that the search coil emits powerful and very short magnetic pulses, which generate electrical currents in the metallic object or other conductive objects. These currents can then also be received by the probe since it switches to receiving after the emission of magnetic pulses. Through this type of induction, metal objects can become very deep get discovered. At the same time, this principle allows the depth of search to be increased by increasing the size of the search coils.
In the transmit phase, the coil at the bottom of the metal detector is traversed by strong direct current between 600 and 2000 times per second. After some time, a solid magnetic field is generated, which then ends very abruptly. This creates eddy currents in neighboring metal objects. The larger the object, the stronger this eddy current becomes. Now the device automatically switches over to the reception phase.
In the receive phase, the secondary magnetic field generated by the eddy currents in the metal object acts on the coil, generating a small electrical voltage there, which is relayed via a cable to the control panel, where the seeker outputs an acoustic and optical signal over the sensor Strength of this signal is informed. The larger the object, the larger the secondary magnetic field and the stronger the Signal.
The other measuring method is referred to as AC measurement or “continuous wave” (CW mode). In contrast to pulse induction technology, which uses strong direct current, alternating current is used here. The probe continuously transmits a low-frequency AC signal that is in a frequency range of around 10 kHz. In this case, the probe does not switch continuously between transmission and reception, as is the case with pulse measurement, but continuously measures the received signals regarding amplitude and phase position, which are analyzed in the spectral range. Each metallic object has a different conductivity, which is now detected by the probe.
In this case, the received data are analyzed concerning the change in the amplitudes and phase angles. This allows the device to determine what type of object is on the ground and what size it has. Some devices also work with different transmission frequencies that are transmitted simultaneously. Thus, the measurement result can be further refined.
What are different types of metal detectors there?
Depending on which objects you would like to find in his search, you have to resort to very different metal detectors. A distinction is made between several different device types, which differ in particular about the possible depth of the search and the size of the objects to be found.
Probably the best-known variety is a metal detector, which is suitable for both large and small objects. These all-around metal detectors are very popular with newbies or treasure hunters who want to discover the widest possible range of objects.
The downside to this design is that very small objects and objects are not displayed at depth or not displayed correctly. Therefore, they are usually also equipped with a Pin Pointer function, which allows locating the find more accurately.

If you want to go underwater, there are special underwater metal detectors. Depending on the model, they are completely watertight to a certain depth and enable the search for treasures on the seabed. Such devices are used, for example, when a wreck has been discovered. For such a search usually a very simple metal detector is sufficient because the lost objects are often still in direct surface proximity. Because most people use a metal detector, of course, for the so-called paclins. This term refers to the search for hidden objects in the ground, which is operated by private persons. Meanwhile, there is a large group of people who have discovered this search for themselves and become true hobby archaeologists. Usually, you start looking for objects in your garden, and you are already amazed at how many things you can already discover in your home.
But the ping-pong is like a journey into the past. Especially in forest areas in Germany, many relics of metal can be discovered, most of which date back to the time of the Second World War. These two settings should be given in any case, so that you can adapt the device to the respective soil conditions. High-quality metal detectors

How did we test the metal detectors?
To guarantee an unaltered comparison result, we subjected each metal detector the same treatment. For this, we first prepared a larger number of pots in which we buried the most diverse objects. These included cutlery, a gold ring, nails, aluminum foil, beverage cans, copper coins, silver jewelry and similar things.
The decisive factor was that they were made of different metals and also had different sizes. Also, at one point we buried larger objects such as a metal pot and car rims, both of iron and aluminum, to a depth of one and a half meters in the ground. With this, we test how deep the devices could still locate the respective objects.
Each pot was now labeled, so we always knew exactly which object was on the ground and how deep it was buried. Here we let our imagination run wild because even in nature large and small parts can occur that are sometimes deeper or closer to the surface.
To be able to compare the different comparison results with each other, we tested each pot with a device and looked to see if it correctly recognized the metal type and the depth, of course, we also paid attention to whether the object was located correctly.
For this, we had put a small stick each to the place where the object was on the ground. On a separate area of about one square meter, we buried quite different types of metal next to garbage, which was mostly made of aluminum. That's how we test the discrimination function.
So we could compare different devices and find out, which corresponded to the high expectations we have for a well-functioning metal detector. Because who decides to become a treasure hunter, should have a reliable metal detector, so that the search does not become a big disappointment.
Remember the metal types or attach small pieces of paper to the pots, so you do not get confused later.
