How does a metal detector work?
A metal detector is a highly complex instrument designed to detect metal. There are mainly two different measuring methods that are used in the devices, and each has very specific advantages and properties.
The pulse induction technique (PI technique) is based on the principle that the search coil emits powerful and very short magnetic pulses, which generate electrical currents in the metallic object or other conductive objects. These currents can then also be received by the probe since it switches to receiving after the emission of magnetic pulses. Through this type of induction, metal objects can become very deep get discovered. At the same time, this principle allows the depth of search to be increased by increasing the size of the search coils.
In the transmit phase, the coil at the bottom of the metal detector is traversed by strong direct current between 600 and 2000 times per second. After some time, a solid magnetic field is generated, which then ends very abruptly. This creates eddy currents in neighboring metal objects. The larger the object, the stronger this eddy current becomes. Now the device automatically switches over to the reception phase.
In the receive phase, the secondary magnetic field generated by the eddy currents in the metal object acts on the coil, generating a small electrical voltage there, which is relayed via a cable to the control panel, where the seeker outputs an acoustic and optical signal over the sensor Strength of this signal is informed. The larger the object, the larger the secondary magnetic field and the stronger the Signal.
The other measuring method is referred to as AC measurement or “continuous wave” (CW mode). In contrast to pulse induction technology, which uses strong direct current, alternating current is used here. The probe continuously transmits a low-frequency AC signal that is in a frequency range of around 10 kHz. In this case, the probe does not switch continuously between transmission and reception, as is the case with pulse measurement, but continuously measures the received signals regarding amplitude and phase position, which are analyzed in the spectral range. Each metallic object has a different conductivity, which is now detected by the probe.
In this case, the received data are analyzed concerning the change in the amplitudes and phase angles. This allows the device to determine what type of object is on the ground and what size it has. Some devices also work with different transmission frequencies that are transmitted simultaneously. Thus, the measurement result can be further refined.
What are different types of metal detectors there?
Depending on which objects you would like to find in his search, you have to resort to very different metal detectors. A distinction is made between several different device types, which differ in particular about the possible depth of the search and the size of the objects to be found.
Probably the best-known variety is a metal detector, which is suitable for both large and small objects. These all-around metal detectors are very popular with newbies or treasure hunters who want to discover the widest possible range of objects.
The downside to this design is that very small objects and objects are not displayed at depth or not displayed correctly. Therefore, they are usually also equipped with a Pin Pointer function, which allows locating the find more accurately.
This saves a long search. Because of the construction of these devices, you can scan larger areas with a more finely tuned search with another device. This type of device is thus used to scan larger areas. Due to their large field of application, they are suitable for beginners, but also for professional treasure hunters, who search entire areas for found objects.
Once you have found a place where many different finds pile up, you can fall back on a special device that was designed to find very small objects. This allows even very small finds to be located to a depth of up to half a meter. Since the coils are often waterproof today, such probes are also used in the gold search, since the small nuggets deposit mainly in shallow areas of rivers.
If you have found a good spot in the river, you can fish many nuggets out of the water with such a device within one day. Fortunately, the days when you had to dig in the river for a long time are over nowadays due to such devices.
Those who are completely devoted to the gold in their search can rely on special devices that were designed only for the search for gold. These are used, for example, in rivers or old mines, if gold is suspected here. The advantage of such a device is that it is very sensitive to gold due to its design and provides much more reliable results in this respect than a normal metal detector.
If you want to go underwater, there are special underwater metal detectors. Depending on the model, they are completely watertight to a certain depth and enable the search for treasures on the seabed. Such devices are used, for example, when a wreck has been discovered. Here archaeologists first work with watertight metal detectors to find coins and other metal objects buried in the sand.
Even for very low-lying objects, there is a suitable metal detector. If you suspect treasures at a greater depth, you must resort to special equipment with which a good depth location is possible. This is possible, for example, with a 3D ground radar. These devices often indicate not only whether there are metal objects on the ground, but also whether there are cavities in the ground that suggest caves or graves.
Advantages of a metal detector
Metal detectors can be used in very different situations and offer a variety of users quite individual advantages.Anyone who has traveled by plane has already gone through a very powerful metal detector. Before the passenger is allowed to enter the security area of an airport, he must undergo a check for metallic objects.
This is done through a kind of gate, in the bottom and top and sides of very powerful probes are attached, with which the passenger is examined for metal objects. This guarantees that nobody can bring knives, pistols or other weapons into the aircraft.
When the big metal detector hits, you are asked to enter an adjacent parcel, where a policeman with a portable metal detector continues to investigate. This allows the signal to be precisely located and determined, as the large metal detector also strikes metallic belt buckles and trouser buttons. This method is very effective and allows a high level of safety in flight operations.
Everyone knows how annoying it can be to lose an important object in the great outdoors. There is usually very high grass or impenetrable undergrowth, in which you can hardly find small objects such as keys or a ring. Even if you can do it, it usually takes a lot of time. Again, the metal detector can be of great benefit, provided that the lost object is also made of metal.
There are many reports of desperate people who have lost their wedding ring or car keys while gardening or on a trip to the countryside and could not find again. For such a search usually a very simple metal detector is sufficient because the lost objects are often still in direct surface proximity. Those who have finally recovered their wedding ring or the keys are usually so excited that they also used the device beyond for the first real treasure hunts. This turns a difficult situation into the cornerstone of an exciting hobby.
Because most people use a metal detector, of course, for the so-called paclins. This term refers to the search for hidden objects in the ground, which is operated by private persons. Meanwhile, there is a large group of people who have discovered this search for themselves and become true hobby archaeologists. Usually, you start looking for objects in your garden, and you are already amazed at how many things you can already discover in your home.
But the ping-pong is like a journey into the past. Especially in forest areas in Germany, many relics of metal can be discovered, most of which date back to the time of the Second World War. Here, the soldiers lost orders, coins and ammunition in the battles, which are today brought back to light by amateur archaeologists. Anyone who does this wisely can make some very exciting finds that can give an idea of what the money looked like a hundred years ago.
Many also use metal detectors on the beach, because very often objects are lost here. Once covered with a bit of sand, they can almost no longer be found. However, if you have a metal detector at hand, even smaller objects are quickly found again. Also, since most probes are waterproof, you can even search for smaller gold nuggets with a metal detector in rivers.
Of course, metal detectors also have great advantages in the professional field. Craftsmen use them to detect copper cables lying on the ground so that they are not damaged during work. Smaller metal detectors are used to determine the exact location of power or water pipes in the wall.
This ensures that none of these lines are damaged when a nail is hammered in or when drilling into the wall. Of course, archaeologists, in particular, are taking advantage of the benefits metal detectors bring to their work. With it, large areas can be quickly and easily checked for metal, cavities or graves. After evaluating this data, you can then very selectively start the first excavations.
Thus, it is no longer necessary to dig up the entire soil, but you can effectively examine only the places where potential finds are suspected. The military mainly uses metal detectors to track down mines. Here, this technique has already saved many lives.
What features should I look for when buying a metal detector?
Before you get a metal detector, you should think carefully about which functions are personally important and for what purpose you want to use the device.
Inexpensive metal detectors
Inexpensive metal detectors often offer very few functions, but they are sufficient for most users. First, you should make sure that there is a small ad. In the lower price segment, this is usually a small needle indicator, which tells the seeker what type of metal it is in the find in the ground and the size of the object by the direction and strength of the rash.
These screens must first be zeroed before searching to provide correct results. In addition to the display, inexpensive devices usually also have the option of adjusting the discriminator and regulating the sensitivity of the device. These two settings should be given in any case, so that you can adapt the device to the respective soil conditions. Often there is also a rotary knob with which the acoustic signal can be adjusted or attenuated.
High-quality metal detectors
High-quality metal detectors usually provide the user with an LCD that not only displays the metal type but also provides information about the depth of the object and the search direction. This display is often lit or has a lighting function so that you can work in the dark.
In addition to the optical display, the searcher is supported by acoustic signals, so he does not have to constantly look at the display. Also, high-quality metal detectors usually also offer an integrated Pin Pointer, with which one can locate the first finds more precisely. This is convenient because you do not have to carry another device with you.
Regardless of price, there are two other features that are often ignored when making a purchase. Firstly, it must be ensured that the device can be adapted correctly to the body size. If the rod on which the probe is located cannot be extended sufficiently, the search becomes a torment, especially for tall people.
Therefore, inform yourself beforehand whether the length of the device also corresponds to your body size. The other function, which is often not considered, concerns the probe. It is very useful to be able to vary the size and shape of the metal detector probe.
For this purpose, it must be possible to acquire additional search coils or to attach other makes to the device. So you can, depending on the search and terrain, replace the normal coil for a much larger, for example, to first probe a large area. Here you can set up small flags, where you have discovered with the large probe potential finds. If you now mount a smaller probe, you can discover even smaller objects much better.
How did we test the metal detectors?
To guarantee an unaltered comparison result, we subjected each metal detector the same treatment. For this, we first prepared a larger number of pots in which we buried the most diverse objects. These included cutlery, a gold ring, nails, aluminum foil, beverage cans, copper coins, silver jewelry and similar things.
The decisive factor was that they were made of different metals and also had different sizes. Also, at one point we buried larger objects such as a metal pot and car rims, both of iron and aluminum, to a depth of one and a half meters in the ground. With this, we test how deep the devices could still locate the respective objects.
Each pot was now labeled, so we always knew exactly which object was on the ground and how deep it was buried. Here we let our imagination run wild because even in nature large and small parts can occur that are sometimes deeper or closer to the surface.
To be able to compare the different comparison results with each other, we tested each pot with a device and looked to see if it correctly recognized the metal type and the depth, of course, we also paid attention to whether the object was located correctly.
For this, we had put a small stick each to the place where the object was on the ground. On a separate area of about one square meter, we buried quite different types of metal next to garbage, which was mostly made of aluminum. That's how we test the discrimination function.
So we could compare different devices and find out, which corresponded to the high expectations we have for a well-functioning metal detector. Because who decides to become a treasure hunter, should have a reliable metal detector, so that the search does not become a big disappointment.
Remember the metal types or attach small pieces of paper to the pots, so you do not get confused later. Now use your new device to test whether it correctly displays the different types of metal and whether the objects can be precisely localized. You should also try to familiarize yourself with the Discrimination feature so that you can use the new metal detector correctly.
How much is a metal detector?
The price of a metal detector is logically dependent on which features you would like to use. In our test, it turned out that there are about four price groups that can be distinguished from each other.
1st prize group:
At the bottom of the scale are devices that cost under one hundred euros. They are usually very simple and do not always have an armrest, which of course are of course in the devices in the higher price ranges of course.
The display used in such devices is usually a very simple pointer which, depending on the direction and magnitude of the deflection, provides information about the type of metal and the size of the object. Some manufacturers give up entirely on a visual display and equip their inexpensive devices instead with a stronger search system.
Here you are assisted in the search by various acoustic signals that help to determine the size and type of the metal. Devices under one hundred euros are most suitable for people who want to find a lost item or for teens who want to make their first attempts at the treasure hunt.
2nd prize group:
In the price range between one hundred and three hundred euros, the market is highly competitive. Almost all of the models offer a very well-balanced price-performance ratio, as you can already discover functions such as a built-in PinPointer or an LCD.
If you decide to go into the world of treasure hunting, you should choose a device from this price range because they are powerful enough to locate real finds. At the same time, they can also be set so precisely that you can hide unwanted items correctly using a good discrimination feature. In this price range is worth a detailed comparison, since each device has very specific features.
3rd prize group:
Anyone who has already gained initial experience with the paddling will soon look for a powerful model. In the price range between three hundred and one thousand euro, one finds already devices, which also meet high claims without problems. They usually provide very PinPointer, which helps to pinpoint the exact location help. Such devices are also built almost exclusively by reputable companies that offer the user a wide range of accessories.
So you can usually buy different coils optional, so you can use his device very versatile. The displays of these devices offer the user a wealth of information. So it is usually possible to obtain information about the size, texture, and depth of the object. So anyone who is sure that he has found great favor in the treasure hunt should afford a device from this price range, with which he can have fun for a long time.
4th prize group:
If you want to work professionally with a metal detector, you can not get around a professional device that can be located in the price range from a thousand euros. Here, the user can expect a first-class device with which a maximum number of finds in the ground can be located.
These devices are very stable and offer the user the possibility to adapt the search exactly to the ground conditions using different coils. Devices in this price range are used by archaeologists or research institutes to ensure the greatest possible effectiveness. Also, they usually allow a much greater depth in the search, as cheaper devices.

Internet vs. Retailers: where do I buy my metal detector best?
Anyone who decides to buy a metal detector is faced with the big question of whether he wants to buy it in stores or on the Internet. Both options offer advantages and disadvantages, which will be briefly explained below.
Previously, it was assumed that such highly specialized devices such as a metal detector should necessarily buy in a specialty store. But if you look at the shops that offer such devices, it is easy to see that there are hardly any special shops for treasure hunters.
Rather, these are often offered in weapons or outdoor shops, in which the seller rather familiar with other areas. Also, only beginner equipment is usually offered here, since the sale of very expensive metal detectors is manageable and these devices can quickly become a shelf warmer, which then has to be sold below the actual value to at least partially reinvest the invested capital to generate.
Since the treasure hunt with metal detectors is a rather unusual hobby, which is not often asked, these shops often have one or two different entry-level models in stock, but otherwise offer hardly any available accessories such as additional bobbins or matching shopping bags.
The purchase of a metal detector on the Internet, however, offers the customer a variety of benefits. First, there are vendors offering a range of more than forty different metal detectors, most of which can be shipped the same day.
Here you can with a bit of browsing find the perfect device for your claims and must make no compromises, just because the right metal detector in a store is currently not available. Also, you can usually directly detect whether the device is in stock.
Many companies offer express delivery, so that the next day the selected model in your hands, without having to go to a specialty store. Likewise, the companies specialized in these devices offer a wide range of accessories, which can be ordered at the same time. This ranges from excavation tools to matching shopping bags to coils of different sizes and the right batteries.
Those who run such Internet shops are also mostly absolute professionals in this field. So you can often quickly explain your concerns with a phone call and get good advice on choosing the right device. In the event of a complaint or a defect, these providers also have a wide range of spare parts, so you can quickly go back to the treasure hunt. Therefore, the purchase of a metal detector of online retail is recommended, since professionals operate these shops, which can be relied on when buying such a special device well.
What should I pay attention to when using a metal detector?
Who wants to go with a metal detector on the treasure hunt, must pay attention to several things in advance. On the technical side, you first have to become familiar with your device. This is a small test course, in which one buries various objects made of metal, which must then be discovered with the device.
You should bury not only valuable items such as coins or jewelry but also in the immediate vicinity worthless iron and aluminum trash, such as cans or aluminum foil. The objects should also be buried at different depths to see how powerful the metal detector can still detect them. Now you can find out how effective the device is and what sources of error are possible in the search. Above all, it is important to get to know the discrimination function well, because it can be used to separate worthless scrap from precious metals in advance.
You should take enough time for this training because it is the basis for a successful and frustration-free search. Once you have completed these first introductions, you can, first of all, examine your garden. The advantage is that you cannot be disturbed and nobody can complain about some holes in the floor. You will be amazed what you already find in your garden. In principle, every private person in Germany may own a metal detector without special permission.
Anyone who has gained initial experience and wants to search for found objects in nature must first find out about the legal situation about the treasure hunt with metal detectors (see also the detailed article “Legal matters in the treasure hunt“). It is great that in Germany treasure finds are tax-free. So if you find a big lump of gold, you won! However, the use is subject to some restrictions, which are explained in detail in the relevant article.
