How Do Hoverboards Work?

While these scooters don’t exactly hover, it does allow you to move effortlessly back and forth, left and right, without ever touching the ground with your foot like you would with a skateboard. Each wheel has an electric motor that sits in a hub case. Some boards will have dual 400-watt motors. This is pretty much standard for high-quality scooters. This is a good amount of power and logistically can support up to 300 lbs for a 10 mph ride.

However, other boards have higher speeds and can go up to 15 mpg and carry up to 400 lbs. Today’s boards are regulated for speed and come with a governor that keeps a board’s mph to 7.5 mph for safety.
