Best Hair Dryer 2019 • 0 Hair Dryers Reviews

Together with other electrical styling appliances such as curling irons and straightening irons, it thus joins a very popular product range. An assortment that many people also own at home, some of them with a larger selection. However, the hair dryer is one of the appliances found in almost every household – and also in the standard range of many hotel, spa or hospital rooms. Of course, this also ensures that the basic range of hair dryers is almost confusingly large. Hair dryers are available in a wide variety of designs and functions. We have tested current hair dryers for you and present you the 10 comparison test winners of our hair dryer test 2019.

What is a hair dryer?

Hair dryer with diffusor and dueseThe term hairdryer is used today to describe a device that dries or shapes hair using warm or cold hairdryer air. One of the first hair dryers was introduced to the market by a company called Sanitas in 1908: it was called Foen, derived from Föhnwind. And this gave the hairdryer its name, because today it is also called a hairdryer (before the spelling reform Fön). Hair dryers as such are also available as wall or hood models, for example. The former most of us certainly know from public washrooms, such as those in the swimming pool. The latter is mostly known today from the hairdressing salon.

How does a hair dryer work?

Most people today are probably familiar with hair dryers or have them in several versions – for example as travel and everyday models. Because today we use the so-called hairdryer almost every day. Hair dryers have shortened the procedure of annoying and sometimes lengthy hair drying and thus also made it easier. In addition to the pure drying of the hair, it can also be styled with a hairdryer very well and brought into the desired shape.

Woman dries your hair

But how exactly does a hairdryer make this possible? How does a hair dryer like this work today?

The hair dryer is now more than 100 years old. This means, of course, that it has also changed in the course of its triumphal march on the market. The hairdryer as we know it today has very little in common with the original Sanitas model. But the basic functional principle is still the same today: The hair dryer blows the moisture out of the hair so to speak and ensures that it dries faster. In addition, the hair can be heated or cooled by blow-dryer air so that it can be straightened, blow-dryed over round brushes or blow-dryed on curlers.

But back to the question of how such a hairdryer works in the first place: Every hairdryer still has a blower which sucks in air at the back of the hairdryer, directs it through heating wires and finally blows it out through the front ventilation grille onto the hair. If desired, and if this model allows it, it can be decided by means of an adjustment how much the air should be heated. Optionally there is today mostly also a setting, with which the air is not heated at all. The air is blown through the blower in the middle of and onto the hair, which at best should be towel-dried by the manufacturers.

Completely wet hair should not be blown with a hairdryer. The hair should also not be exposed to excessive heat for too long. The reason: If the heat is too high, the water molecules in the hair strand heat up too much, which can destroy it. However, modern hair dryers and the majority of our comparative test winners now have many special functions that make gentle treatment of the hair possible.

Who needs a hair dryer?

When many people hear the term hair dryer, it is usually directly associated with a woman's use. This may certainly contain some truth, but the picture around the use of a hair dryer has changed again and again in recent years.

Because a modern and stylish hairstyle is obligatory for most people today. This goes so far that many people without suitable styling of the hair do not even leave the house and do not even open the front door, if it can be avoided somehow. The Germans are very vain with their hair and are anxious to always be able to show optimal results here. Of course, there may be one or the other exception here again and again, but in general this statement is still relevant.

Philips Moisture Protect Hairdryer HP828000From this fact it can be deduced relatively quickly who and which group of people needs a hairdryer for daily use in the bathroom. In most households, whether dominated by male or female members, at least one modern hairdryer is present.

Of course, this is also used regularly. But the assumption that it is a predominantly female utensil for styling and care is simply wrong today. Men are also trying harder and harder to stylize their own hairstyles and are not afraid of either cost or effort. Directly after showering and shampooing, more and more men are using a hairdryer to get their hairstyle into the right shape.

The acceptance of the hair dryer is unbroken. Not only young men and women use it, but it is a utensil for all age groups. Teenagers, young adults and even senior citizens no longer do without a hair dryer in their own bathroom.

The reasons for this are certainly also the quality of the hairstyles. Many fine details can no longer be achieved in the desired form without a hair dryer. Whether it is the large volume on the entire head or the special “Tolle”, in which the hair falls casually to the desired side, with a hairdryer, skilled hands and some experience, impressive shapes and hairstyles can be formed thanks to the powerful and modern technology in the form of the dryer.

Braun Satin Hair 7 SensoDryer HairdryerA small part to the Trend and the great popularity of the dryer may also have contributed the craft of hairdressers. Without a modern hairdryer, almost nothing works here anymore, the dryer has become a very important and daily used tool in your own salon.

Accordingly, it is of course no wonder that more and more men and women are opting for regular use in their own bathrooms. After all, the right application promises such good results and a great hairstyle as directly after the visit to the hairdresser.

Stress, hectic rush and little time in the morning determine the picture in many households. Professionals usually have little time in the morning to finish styling. The hair dryer is also a very good help here so that this looks good nevertheless and can correspond to the own requirements. At the same time, it appeals to another very large target group. Because if you have to be quick in the morning, the hair dryer is the tool of choice to get your hair dryer ready in time.

Many people today simply no longer have the time to wait until the hair has dried extensively in the air after washing. With the fast drying by hair dryer the user saves valuable minutes in the morning and still does not have to make actual swabs neither during care nor during the subsequent styling.

By the way, the modern hairdryer is not only available in the private sector, but also meets the users again and again in everyday life. A good example is a trip to a hotel or a guesthouse.

Because also here the modern hairdryer is always present and simply must not be missing. This constant presence makes the importance of the hair dryer once again very clear and shows how often they are used today and how indispensable they have even become in everyday life.

What can a hair dryer do?

A hair dryer has first and foremost of course a primary function, namely the drying of the hair. Of course, most models on the market do this very reliably and without any problems, but the possibilities for use are even more varied. The models like to show this in the hair dryer test as well.

Rowenta CV6030 Hairdryer Eco IntelligenceSo the hairdryer saves a lot of time every morning. Often there is very little time between getting up and driving to work. Accordingly, every minute here is very valuable.

However, people do not want to do without the morning shower and the appealing styling of the hair of course. The hair dryer provides a completely dry hairstyle within a few minutes, so that styling can be started directly.

The hair dryers are also very suitable for special hairstyles and special shapes in the hair. As most people know, hair can be persuaded to have some properties by high temperatures.

So the heat provides for smooth hair , on this principle is based not only the ironing, but also every straightening iron. And it's the high temperature that every user can also use for styling when using the hair dryer.

With temperatures of over 60 degrees Celsius the hair dryer is able to achieve different hairstyles and finenesses of the hair. The hair dryer can be used, for example, to bring waves or razzle-dazzle into the hair without having to spend a lot of time on it.

For this purpose, the hair is simply treated directly with a suitable brush when drying with the hair dryer. By placing the hairdryer directly over the hair and brushing it into shape, this styling continues even after drying is complete. The same principle can also be used for smoothing. Curls may be very practical for one hairstyle or another, but of course this is not always the case.

Udo Walz by Beurer P1 2500 HairdryerTo ensure that the Straight iron does not always have to be used in addition, correct drying with the hair dryer can also achieve a good effect here. Because with a special attachment, which concentrates the warm air on the desired areas in the hair, the hair can be smoothed very easily in combination with the matching brush.

This works for thick as well as for thin hair, but the effect is of course even more intense for thin hair.

Whether the smooth look, a tousled hairstyle or an elegant quiff, the hairdryer is the ideal tool to realize the right styling in the morning, at noon and in the evening within a short time.

Philips Ion Hairdryer

However, the hair dryer is not only for drying the hair in daily use. In fact, there are always supposed tips and tricks on the Internet that rely on the function and performance of the modern hair dryer .

According to an old household tip, defrosting in the freezer with a hairdryer should work much faster and more comfortably. However, this is not only dangerous, but also consumes a lot of electricity.

Many people also use the hair dryer to dry residual moisture, for example from upholstery. If things have to go fast, this is certainly a possibility, but caution should always be the first priority.

Burns caused by too high temperatures are unfortunately anything but rare in these scenarios, even if they are easy to avoid in principle.

Advantages & Application areas

With a hairdryer you can dry your hair faster than in the air. On the other hand, hair can also be styled and shaped with the hairdryer. The possibilities here are quite varied: The hair can be simply brought into a smooth and shiny form by means of a hairdryer and a suitable brush, which for example could quickly bring a gentle end to stubborn and slightly curly hair. However, the hair can also be blow-dried with a round brush or turned up on curlers and gently dry-dried.

Natural curls can be dried and shaped particularly gently and gently with aids such as a diffuser. dryer nozzles make it easier to blow dry beyond that, depending on hair length and hairstyle. Most hair dryers and all our comparative winners now contain various attachments that make drying and styling hair easier and more effective.

What types of hair dryers are there?

The hair dryer as such is now well over 100 years old and can be found in almost every household in multiple versions. This means that it has to appeal to many different tastes and meet a wide range of demands. Many hair dryers look the same at first glance, but at second glance they are usually not. Because in the small but fine detail no hair dryer is like the other – and the individual models differ clearly not only in their design and in their price range. Today, hair dryers are also available in different power levels, with different functions and with different technologies.

As is customary in the trade, most of the hairdryers for everyday use today have between 2000 and 2400 watts. The following applies here: The more power, the faster the hair can be dried or styled. The extent to which performance can play a role in this is shown, for example, by handy but less powerful travel wages. These usually have an average power of about 1200 to 1600 watts and the drying of the hair takes much longer with these than with the much more powerful hairdryer at home. Travel hairdryers, which are also a very special type of hairdryer, are not only less powerful, but also smaller and sometimes even foldable. The main focus here is clearly that the hairdryer is as small and easy to stow as possible.

Hair dryers for everyday use, on the other hand, should be able to do a lot. You should dry or style the hair quickly yet gently. In most cases, they have different temperature and fan stages. This allows both the strength of the air flow and the heat from it to be regulated relatively individually. Most hairdryers today have an average of 3 to 5 selectable blower and temperature levels – including the possibility of blow-drying the hair with cold air. This function not only has the advantage that it is very gentle on the hair – it also cools the hair more quickly and fixes the hairstyle better and faster.

So we tested the hair dryers

To find a suitable tester team that takes a close look at the hair dryer: That was our assignment for this hair dryer test 2019. And we have mastered this task. We have put together a group of testers who couldn't be more different – people from different age groups, from different fields of interest and with different ideas about what a hairdryer should and must be able to do, came together here.

So we tested men and women who wanted to use the hairdryer only for hair drying. Users who are more concerned that the hairdryer is as energy-efficient as possible. Men and women who want to dry and style their hair comfortably and specifically at home. But also experts from the field of hair styling, who know what is important when it comes to styling and hair care.

We have therefore evaluated according to very different requirements and criteria. In this hair dryer test 2019, you will benefit above all from a selection of exclusive and really high-quality appliances from different manufacturers, who are all worth every cent of their money – but who come in very different price categories. But what did we evaluate in detail in this hair dryer test 2019? What questions did we ask ourselves – and what questions did the comparative test winners particularly convince our testers of? In this test, we were wondering things like:

How many fan and temperature levels does the unit have?
Our hair is quite sensitive when it comes to unnatural procedures. And heat is one of those unnatural procedures that can do more harm than good to the hair. However, hair is not always equally sensitive – and it is not always possible to tame or shape it equally well. Hair can be fine or very strong and therefore also more or less sensitive. Therefore a hairdryer should always be able to be individually adapted to the hair situation at hand. This means that a hair dryer should at best have as many different fan and temperature settings as possible. This allows the intensity of the foehn air as well as the strength of the heat to which the hair is exposed during drying or styling to be adjusted. And: Both should be independently controllable.

How large is the range of functions – are there special functions?
However, in addition to various levels, the hairdryer should also have some other functions. Two very important ones are for example the cold stage and a turbo function. The Cold step is an essential function, which should not be missing in well-known hairdressing salons since many hairs. Thanks to it, the hair can not only be dried with cool air if desired – it can also be cooled. This allows you to fix different styles and make them last longer. The Turbo function, on the other hand, dries the hair extremely quickly due to a particularly strong air flow. This can show up to 90 km/h. However, this causes the hair to whirl up very strongly, which creates volume – but is not recommended especially for very stoic hair. In addition, the turbo function is also very helpful if you are in a hurry after washing your hair.

Will the hairdryer protect against overheating?
As already mentioned, the individual hair strands are very sensitive. For this reason, most hairdryers today not only have different levels of airflow temperature, but also overheating protection. Because the wetter the hair is, the greater the risk that it will overheat and damage the hair strand. A modern overheating protection ensures that the heating wires cannot become too hot.

Provides automatic switch-off for safety?
But not only the hair should be protected from the hair dryer: Even you and your home. Cause it happened fast: The hairdryer switches itself on unnoticed by an accident or you forget to switch it off again after use for whatever reason. The best hairdryers today have an automatic switch-off system – even many of our comparative test winners. This automatic system ensures that the hair dryer switches itself off at the latest after a while and when a certain temperature is reached – or when it is taken off. The function that sinkings and fires should avoid, however, can usually also be switched off.

What do I have to look out for when buying a hair dryer?

The selection of hair dryers today is incredibly large. They are available with the most diverse functions and in the most varied designs. In case of doubt, however, this also means that you are spoilt for choice when looking for a suitable hairdryer. Which hair dryer should it be? The cost-effective all-rounder? The modern all-rounder? Or the well-known and hip brand model? In order to be able to answer this question individually, you first have to ask yourself what you are looking for and what your hairdryer should bring. Should it be something cheap or something of a name? Do you care a lot about the skill of the device, or are you just looking for something to dry your hair? And what role do the design and appearance of the hairdryer play?

However, there are a few other things you should not lose sight of. In our hair dryer test 2019 we also tell you, quite independently of our comparison winners and comparison results, what you should pay attention to when buying a hairdryer: And what you should ask yourself when searching.

    • What must the device be able to do?
Hair dryers are clearly not the same today. As already mentioned, modern hairdryers are represented today in the most diverse equipment, designs and with the most diverse functions. However, a hairdryer does not always have to be able to do everything, present all functions or bring all kinds of attachments with it. When searching for the right hairdryer, it is important that it meets your requirements. Of course, the following applies: The hairdryer should be able to do a little more than too little. Even if at the moment of purchase you are only looking for a hair dryer to dry your hair, it is quite possible that this will change at some point and that you will also want to use the hairdryer for styling. Since a high-quality hairdryer should “live” usually longer than a few years, the purchase should be well considered here.
  • Are you right- or left-handed?
Basically, most hairdryers are still designed for legal traders today. However, most manufacturers do not ignore the needs of left-wing dealers. Although there are very few companies that offer hair dryers for left-handers, most modern hairdryers can also be operated and held by left-handers without any problems. As a left-hand dealer, you should pay attention to how well the selected hairdryer is in your hand when you buy it.
  • What may the hairdryer cost?
The price range for hardly any everyday object is as wide as for hair styling appliances. The reason: not only the most popular and well-known manufacturers offer a wide variety of models in a wide range of functions and price categories, but also many discount manufacturers and so-called no-name companies. And: Behind these are partly known manufacturers who produce their goods for certain dealers at more favorable conditions. Today you can get a hairdryer on average for prices between 10 and 100 Euros – and there is not always a lack of quality here.

Nevertheless, you should take a close look at cheap devices and models from brands you don't know. Take a look at the technical specifications and compare them with those of other manufacturers if possible. In the case of hair dryers that you purchase from abroad or on the Internet, you should also pay attention to the DIN and GS test seals. These show you that the hairdryer complies with the safety regulations applicable in Europe and Germany.

  • Metal or plastic – which is better?
Plastic hairdryers are usually cheaper to have, but unfortunately they are also less robust and therefore less durable than metal hairdryers. In addition, however, you should also pay attention to how heavy, how large and how handy the hair dryer is. Most manufacturers today make sure that even metal devices are as light as possible, but there are still minimal to serious differences.

Woran you should not save?
Most people today want to save money wherever they can – even when buying a new hairdryer. As already mentioned, there's no reason why you shouldn't as long as you don't save on quality, service and security. Because even if you can afford a true gold handle on a no-name bargain, it can go wrong under unfavourable circumstances. So if you're really only interested in small amounts of money, you might want to invest in the name of a sought-after provider. Because these often captivate not only by a larger selection and very high quality standards, but also by a very extensive and customer-oriented service.

An overview of the most important data for the hair dryers in the test

Before buying a hair dryer, it is of course important to pay attention to some aspects of the device. The power, which should in any case be over 1,000 watts, is particularly noteworthy. For faster drying, devices with a higher wattage are available. Furthermore, the air speed of the respective hair dryer must be observed.

A speed of 60 to 85 kilometres per hour (km/h) can be expected. Of great importance in this case is that at a higher speed the hair can be dried faster in any case. This is due to the higher air speed, but also to the fact that the hair is damaged more quickly. Especially with longer hair, the strong air often causes damage or even leaves the hair. Accordingly, it is important that the Föhn has different speed levels.

In this way, the right level can always be chosen according to need. With most devices the air speed can be regulated in 2 steps. Some models also have 3 to 6 steps. These hair dryers are especially useful for sensitive hair, in order to dry them slowly but gently after washing.

Just like the speed, it is often also possible to adjust the temperature of the hair dryer. Ideally, the hair should be dried at a temperature of 65 to 70 degrees. However, some hair dryers also reach temperatures from 100 to 106 degrees. In this case, the hair is dried very quickly, but the risk of damaging his hair or scalp is much higher. In addition, this high temperature ensures that users can burn themselves quickly.

As with the heat stages, there is often also a cooling stage. This is a separate button that can be pressed at any time. By pressing the button, the heating coil inside the Föhn is switched off, so that it only emits air. The respective Föhn temperature cools down correspondingly quickly to avoid injuries to the scalp or damage to the hair. In addition, the cooler air can fix the styling of the hair.

Another point that should be mentioned among the factors is the size of the respective nozzle of the hair dryer. On average, the diameter of the centering nozzle is between 10 and 12 centimetres. In this way, a large flow of air can be expected in order to cover as many hairs as possible. With the appropriate attachment, the size of the opening can be further widened or reduced.

In addition, the volume of the respective Föhn must be observed. Depending on the level and size of the centering nozzle, a volume of more than 65 dB can be expected. This can lead to damage to the ears, especially during prolonged use. It therefore makes sense to opt for a device that produces as little noise as possible, i.e. less than 60 dB. In addition, it should be noted that noise levels vary depending on the level. Therefore, lower steps ensure that the hair dryer blows quietly. It is also important to make sure that the dust filter on the back of the unit is free of dust. If this is not the case, this can have a negative effect on the volume. A regular cleaning of the hair dryer is therefore recommended.

Finally, it should be mentioned in the facts that the length of the respective power cable may differ. In most cases, a cable length of 1.8 meters is to be expected. This should be sufficient to be able to easily reach the socket in any bathroom. There are also models with a cable length of 2.5 to 3 meters. These hair dryers can be used more flexibly, but they also make transport more complicated due to the longer cable

Current consumption of a hair dryer

Numerous power guzzlers are used again and again every day and in every household. But in times of rising prices for electricity and energy, more and more people want to become more aware of the use of these devices and recognize the real power guzzlers in everyday life. Inevitably, the hair dryer comes into focus when searching for the corresponding devices. Also known as a hairdryer, the hairdryer quickly heats the air to keep hair dry within a short time. But what about the power consumption of the models available on the market?

In general, it is of course a question of the model and also of personal use. While one can completely dry his short hair within two to three minutes, this usually takes much longer with women. And of course, the performance of the device used also has a significant influence on consumption. Because the higher the power, the more energy the hairdryer needs for daily use.

However, unconscious use of the hair dryer can be very expensive. Many people are not aware of the fact that such a model is one of the biggest power guzzlers in the household and can quickly become very expensive. This is because even three-digit amounts are possible over the course of the year, and in families with several members this figure can be reached very quickly.

The reason lies in the very high power of 1000 to 2000 Watt, which a modern hair dryer provides today. Of course, this performance is also necessary to achieve the desired result when drying the hair. However, it should be noted that this service can only be provided at the highest level.

The cost of electricity consumption per head for a classic hair dryer is around 15 euros per year . The basis for these figures is the use of the dryer over a period of 10 minutes per day throughout the year.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to save electricity with the hair dryer, as the test proves again and again. Many people try to use the dryer at a low level because the energy consumption is of course much lower. However, this also extends the usage time, which means that the Savings is no longer available.

General tricks for shortening the usage time are here a much better variant, for example thorough drying with a towel after showering.

It can also be helpful to let the hair dry in the air for some time after washing or showering, if the time allows it.

Here, too, long and extensive drying with the hair dryer is often no longer necessary, and this saves money, especially with regard to daily use.

The efficiency and the power consumption of course also play an important role in the hair dryer test. Potential customers and users naturally want a model that not only delivers the usual performance, but also reduces running costs, protects the environment and functions very efficiently. In fact, this wish has of course already arrived with the manufacturers.

They are currently trying to bring economical and efficient models onto the market. Although the technology for this is not yet fully developed, the first successes can already be admired today. Accordingly, the coming years can be eagerly awaited as to which new models the manufacturers will bring onto the market here.

What are the current best models and what do they offer?

In the field of styling products, which also includes hair dryers, there are always new developments and improvements to existing equipment. Therefore, it is not surprising that the selection of hair dryers is so extensive. It should of course be noted that some products turn out better than others Hair dryer, as can be researched by the corresponding Test. Sometimes these devices differ in the respective performance or also in the offered functions.

But also optics and construction can be an important point when choosing the best hair dryer. It is important to note that each customer should nevertheless decide for himself what the hair dryer must offer and what properties are expected. So the Producttest can only be seen as a kind of help to make the selection easier.

The following four hair dryers from different companies are currently particularly good models:

  • Philips Moisture Protect Hairdryer HP8280/00
  • Remington D8700 Protect Ion Hairdryer
  • Grundig HD 6080 Ion hair dryer
  • Dyson Supersonic Hair Drye

With these products, good processing and reliable application can be expected first and foremost. This circumstance ensures in particular that the hair dryers can be used for a correspondingly long time. Furthermore, a high-quality design can also be expected, so that the models always fit securely and well in the hand. It should also be noted that both high performance and a powerful engine can be expected. Thus an air speed can be reached, with which the styling of the hair is uncomplicated possible. Other functions that can be expected from these models are the so-called Ion technology. This technology ensures that the hair does not become statically charged during drying by first negatively charging the Föhn air.

The advantage in this case is that a better styling of the hair can be used. The higher the ionization of the air, the less the hair will be charged. High-quality devices offer up to 1.5 million ions per cubic centimeter. In addition the mentioned hair dryers of course have different attachments, setting levels or cooling levels for the correct styling. Last but not least, these models are still very reasonable in price, despite their high quality workmanship and many functions.

The only exception to this is Dyson's device, which has a significantly higher price than competing products. With the time it can be expected that the purchase prices of this hair dryer will also decrease.

In order to be able to use the best hair dryer at any time, it makes sense to keep up to date with the latest products. Of course, a Product test, which is constantly updated, is particularly useful for this purpose. The information provided in Test will certainly help you to make the correct selection.

The best brands in terms of hairdryer

Today the market is bigger than ever before and the manufacturers give everything again and again to win customers and increase sales with new products. Since more and more people and more and more households are opting for the purchase of an appropriate model, the offer of the manufacturers is also very large.

Of course, this has advantages for the customer first and foremost, because among other things it means rapid development, technical innovations and the possibility of acquiring particularly inexpensive and at the same time good models. The best and big brands are already for many years on this market on the way and divide this today well, the models convince in the hair dryer test extensive.

  • Babyliss
  • Comair
  • Dyson
  • Bosch
The company Babyliss is a large company in the beauty sector and offers a wide range of modern hair dryers. The models are probably known to many people from the big salons and perhaps also from their own hairdresser. Originally the offer of Babyliss was mainly aimed at professionals and the professional sector. The increasing demand from private households for good and practical hair dryers, however, led to a turnaround. Today the offer of Babyliss is also consciously aimed at private customers, the products are offered mainly via the Internet in numerous online shops. The hairdryer of the company offers the well-known optics of the company, models from different price categories are represented here.
The manufacturer Comair is also represented on the market with numerous models. However, the brand is less represented in the private sector in particular, as the selection of the various dryers is also aimed at professional users here. In hairdressing salons and in professional styling, however, the models have become indispensable. However, the high-quality hair dryers also appeal directly to private users on request. Thanks to the modern technology and the attractive appearance, this also works very well, because especially when ordering via the Internet, many users decide on a corresponding model of Comair. Here, too, both inexpensive models for beginners and absolute professional models are represented and ensure that the most varied requirements are covered and also inspire again and again in the test.
Innovative and modern products are already known from the manufacturer Dyson from other areas. However, the company is now also venturing into the field of hair dryers and is ready to offer corresponding products. However, the products are also correspondingly expensive and are usually only worthwhile if the hair dryer is really used daily and in the best case by several people in the household. With prices over 300 euros, the Dyson hair dryer is anything but a bargain, but these devices are also very often found in the professional sector, for example in the large and well-known hairdressing salons.
However, these brands are of course not necessarily suitable for the masses, among other things, of course, due to the high costs and prices. If this is desired, the offer of Bosch might be the right choice. The company is certainly a household name for most Germans and is one of the established players on the market. In addition to household appliances and the like, a very large selection of hair dryers can also be found here, which show good results in the hair dryer test. The manufacturer with the brand attaches less importance to the appearance or to technical innovation than to reliable devices that have been tried and tested in everyday use. The manufacturer always provides a large selection with new models. This ensures that Bosch's hair dryer division can cover a wide range of needs without any problems.

Hair dryers from Braun, Philips, AEG and Co – Info about leading manufacturers

Hair dryers today come from countless well-known and lesser known manufacturers. Some manufacturers have specialised exclusively in hair care and hair styling equipment >specialised, other manufacturers offer hair dryers only as a small part of a much wider and more extensive range. Which manufacturer you choose is entirely up to you. Numerous satisfied customers and connoisseurs count on hair dryers, curling irons, straightening irons and the like from manufacturers such as Philips, Remington, Bosch, BaByliss, Braun, Valera and AEG when it comes to hair styling.

Internet vs. specialised trade: Where is the best place to buy my hair dryer?

On site or rather on the Internet: Many people also ask themselves this question when they buy a new hair dryer. Particularly in the case of hairdryers, which are now represented in an incredibly large range, it may be difficult to find a specific and envisaged model on the spot. However, you will usually find numerous devices at a glance – and ready to test and take home with you. Whether Internet or local trade: Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages. We will tell you what these are and what speaks for and against a purchase on the Internet or in the local specialist trade.

The purchase in the specialized trade locally – pro and contra:
There is a large selection on the Internet – and the model you are looking for can be found quickly. But that's not all, of course. On the Internet, it is still cheaper, faster and less complicated to buy – for example from the sofa, even in the middle of the night if desired. By the way, the hairdryers on the Internet are not cheaper because it is not worse goods, but because online merchants reduced personnel and storage costs have to stem and sell their goods mostly at least Germany-wide. However, the lower personnel costs in particular also have one disadvantage that is still widespread today: the lack of service. However, this disadvantage only applies to the fewest online shops today, as they place great emphasis on customer satisfaction. Individual advice is therefore also possible here – for example via telephone, chat or e-mail – and not face to face, but often around the clock.
Buying on the Internet – Pros and Cons:
The direct and personal advice and the direct view on the models available on site, these are clearly the two biggest advantages of trading on site. You can look around in peace, take a close look at each device, see how it fits in your hand and whether you like it. And if you are unsure which device it should be, you can get extensive advice. However, the major disadvantage of the local specialist trade can also be found here: Because no matter how large the selection on site is, it can never be as large as that on the Internet. In particular, very popular models such as our comparison winners are often quickly sold out and may have to be pre-ordered – which ensures several routes and waiting times. Added to this are the prices, which are generally higher than those on the Internet.

The History of Hair Dryers

The hairdryer is known to most people today as the hairdryer. The Föhn owes its colloquial name to the Sanitas company. The Sanitas company launched an electric hair dryer in 1908. At that time, the system already functioned according to a similar principle to today's system: air was blown outwards by a blower via heating rods. However, the first foehn as such did not show any variable temperature and blower levels.  In addition, it was anything but handy and was therefore mainly used in hairdressing. The first hair dryer would be called a foen by Sanitas, which was derived from the foehn wind and was supposed to be a model name. Today, this term is known as a synonym for all hair dryers commonly used in Germany and is often used throughout Germany.
Since AEG took over the FOEN brand in 1957, which also offered and advertised hair dryers under the name hot air showers, it is often mistakenly assumed today that AEG is the originator of the brand and thus also of the first hair dryer. But strictly speaking, it was not Sanitas that invented the hair dryer as such – or its drying and design principle still in use today. It was the Frenchman Alexander Godefroy who used the precursor of a hair dryer in his hair salon in Paris in 1890. However, this was more like the so-called hood-shaped hot-air shower, which was later used to advertise the FOEN brand and thus also AEG.

It was the company AEG that produced an electric hair dryer in 1900 as one of the first German companies – but it was not comparable to the Foen model from Sanitas. However, there were always overlaps, as none of the companies applied for a patent. The first patent for a hair dryer was granted in 1911 by the American Gabriel Kazanjian in the United States. The first hair dryer that resembles today's most was made in the 50s – it was made of plastic and for the first time really handy. In the following decades, however, the hair dryer was to be further reduced in size and at the same time made lighter, more efficient and easier to handle. After all, it was the engineer Jean Mantelet who introduced the pistol shape known today.

Facts about the hairdryer

Within just a few seconds, a modern hair dryer is able to heat the air to the required temperature not only in the test. The hair does not dry directly through the heat, as many people mistakenly assume. Rather, the high temperature enables the air to absorb considerably more moisture. When blowing through the hair, more water is permanently absorbed and the hair dries within a short time.

The hair dryer is also known in many regions of Germany as the Föhn. The name is borrowed from nature or comes from a known weather phenomenon. The special foehn wind is characterised by warm air masses, which are mainly to be found in mountainous regions. Bavaria, the Alps and more are known for their foehn winds. Due to the parallels in functionality, the name Föhn developed over the years as a synonym for a classic hair dryer. However, the very special wind is not the only reason why the hair dryer is also known as a hairdryer in many parts of society.

Because what many people don't know is the fact that “Foen” is also a brand name. Sanitas launched a hairdryer on the market as early as 1908 and, with the designation “Foen”, created a striking impression.

Until the year 1957 the name existed as own brand, here however the name was taken over then by the German enterprise AEG </strong >. Exciting information: Up to this point, the company advertised its own products on the market under the name Hot Air Shower.

The hair dryer is generally anything but a new invention, rather it has undergone a significant change in the past decades.

The first models were developed around 1900, when the German company AEG launched the first electrically operated device for faster drying of hair on the market. Of course, these models can no longer be compared with today's lightweight hair dryers, the differences are immense at first glance.

Nevertheless, these first hair dryers formed the basis for today's models and made the development into a light and portable device possible in the first place. However, it was not until the 50s of the 20th century that the first plastic models came onto the market.

Here, the manufacturers also put more emphasis on the weight and the optics. Even today, the hair dryer is still a design object and is available on the market in various colours and designs.

An alternative form of the classic hair dryer for use in the home is the drying hood. This should be known to most people with certainty from hairdresser. In contrast to the classic hair dryer or hairdryer, the device is not moved during use, but it encloses damp or wet hair directly from all sides.

Due to the constantly high temperature inside, the hair is dried evenly without moving the hairstyle due to the strong air flow. In general, the devices are not only very expensive, but also bulky and heavy. The classic drying hood, as it should be known from the hairdresser, plays only a very small role in the private environment.

However, there are some hairstyles that require the corresponding technique anyway. A good example of this is the permanent wave, which is still very popular among the older generation today.

So that these and similar hairstyles can also be brought into the right shape at home with the right tool, the manufacturers have come up with suitable solutions.

Today there are drying hoods which are especially suitable and optimised for use in private bathrooms. These models are made of simple and light plastic in the form of a thin foil. This is simply pulled over the head. The built-in technology then blows warm air into this hood by means of an attached blower, thus ensuring uniform drying of the hair and perfect results when styling.

Figures, data, facts about hair dryers

The first electric hair dryer, or a forerunner of one, was introduced in 1890 by the Frenchman Alexander Godefroy – however, he did not sell it and did not protect it with a patent. This was followed by companies such as AEG (1900) and Sanitas (1908), which launched various models of the hairdryer or the hot-air shower, as it was often called at the time. The hairdryer owes its current, colloquial name Föhn to the Foen model of the Sanitas form from 1908.

Later, AEG had the name Fön or also Föhn protected. In 1911 the American Gabriel Kazanjian protected the principle of the hair dryer in the USA. The engineer Jean Mantelet developed in the late 50's the today known pistol form of the foehn .

Today the hair dryer is an indispensable part of most households. However, this was different in the past: especially at the beginning of its triumphal march, the hairdryer was only used in hair salons. It was not until the 1950s, when the hairdryer became lighter, handier, smaller, more effective and cheaper, that many private households began to buy one. However, the hair dryer also influenced the behaviour with regard to hair washing. In the past, hair was washed much less often – especially in winter. The main reasons were the long drying processes and the longer and more complicated styling process.

Hairdryers have certain benefits: Usually this power is between 1200 and 2300 Watt. In addition, there are several blower and temperature levels, which modern hair dryers today show. However, modern hair dryers today also differ in the motors used inside them. Conventional hair dryers still have a DC motor today, for example. Such motors are cheaper but less powerful than AC motors, so-called AC motors. The latter are mainly used in hairdressing salons, as they provide more power on the one hand, but are also longer durable. This is why hairdryers equipped with an AC motor are also more expensive than hairdryers equipped with a DC motor.

Ions and infrared technology

Another point in which modern hair dryers differ today is the technologies they have to offer. Two of them are the so-called ion or ceramic technology or the infrared technology. Both technologies are aimed at protecting the hair as well as possible when blow-drying – and even caring for it if necessary.

The so-called ion or ceramic technology, for example, counteracts a positive charge when drying hair. Because normally the hair is electrostatically charged when blow-drying – the hair straightens up. With ion technology, negative ions also shoot out of the hairdryer when the hairdryer is blowing with the heated air stream, which neutralize the positive ions in the hair due to the electrostatic charge. With most hair dryers this function can be switched on and off as desired.

However, through the bombardment with negative ions, the hair also absorbs additional water molecules. The additional moisture gives the hair more shine, more bounce, more vitality and more suppleness. This effect is also known as the “ceramic ion effect”. In addition, however, ceramic and ion technology can now also be expanded with an innovative tourmaline coating. Tourmaline is a gemstone that emits negative ions – and can reinforce the neutralizing effect.

However, the use of a hairdryer, especially a daily hairdryer, can remove a lot of moisture from the hair. This means that despite modern ion and ceramic technology, hair can quickly appear dull and brittle if it is not cared for properly. However, modern infrared technology can also provide a remedy: Unlike conventional hair dryers, the heat is generated here with the support of an integrated infrared lamp. The heat developed in this way is similar to the gentle and warming rays of the sun and is very gentle on the hair. In addition, the infrared waves penetrate into the hair structure and make the hair shinier and smoother.

What are the power consumption and cost of modern hair dryers from the test 2019 ?

Decisive for the power consumption and the associated costs, is the performance of the respective hair dryer. Modern devices can be expected to have an output of approximately 1,000 to 2,500 watts. This means that the devices consume between 1 and 2.5 kilowatt hours (kW/h) when used for one hour. Depending on whether the hairdryer is used exclusively by one person in the household or whether, for example, several people want to dry their hair one after the other, a running time of 1.5 to 2 hours may be required per day. As a result, the hair dryer consumes an average of 2.25 to 4 kW/h every day. As a result, it can be assumed that the electricity consumption by the Föhn in a single household is far less than in a family household or a house with several lots.

If it is now assumed that the kilowatt hour in the respective household costs 0.25 euros, then the fees for the regular use of the hair dryer per hour amount to between 25 and 62 cents. If you use the device at least five times a week, you will quickly incur weekly costs of 2.5 Euro. Consequently, fees in excess of 120 euros can be expected per year. If a more expensive or also more favorable electricity tariff is used, the prices adapt accordingly. As a result, it makes sense to choose an electricity tariff that is correspondingly favourable in order to reduce electricity costs.

To reduce these costs, in most cases the only thing that helps is to dry the hair correspondingly faster. Likewise, most hair dryers have several stages. In the case of short hair, the first stage is often sufficient, which has a correspondingly low power output and thus a lower power consumption.

Furthermore, it can be worthwhile to buy an energy-saving hairdryer. This is a device that offers a high drying capacity but uses as little energy as possible. For this purpose, the device achieves a higher air speed, with which the hair can be dried faster without consuming more power, but there is also hair dryer which simply have a low power consumption, in order to save energy in this way. It can also be worthwhile to buy products with a lower performance, as these are usually sufficient to dry or style the hair quickly. Finally, it is also a good idea to replace older hairdryers with new models.

The reason for this is that older products usually have a much higher power consumption than the new ones. This is mainly due to the materials and technology used in these goods. Therefore it can be assumed that the costs of a new Haartrocker will soon be profitable, because it consumes less power.

5 tips for groomed hair

Anyone can have beautiful hair – and not only with the right hair dryer can the hair shine and make smooth. It also depends on the right care. How this can look like and what you should consider to have beautiful, healthy and well-groomed hair, we tell you in the following 5 tips.

  • Tip 1:
  • Tip 2:
  • Tip 3:
  • Tip 4:
  • Tip 5:
The correct care of the hair clearly does not begin with blow-drying, but with washing. The perfect shampoo should be as well adapted as possible to the hair – and conditioners and hair cures should also meet the needs of the hair. It refreshes greasy hair, gives volume to thin hair and provides valuable moisture to dry hair.
But the hair wants to be treated with care both during and after washing. It is extremely sensitive when wet – even more sensitive than when dry. The water should therefore not be too warm during shampooing. Cold water is best for the hair as it contains less lime than warm water. However, as this is usually quite unpleasant for the scalp, lukewarm water should be used instead of warm water.
After washing, gently wring out the hair and wrap it in a towel. Attention: It should not be rubbed dry, as this damages the hair structure. The hair becomes rough and brittle. The best thing is to leave the hair in the towel for a while so that it can absorb the moisture – or to gently press the hair out with it.
At best, the hair should not be combed when wet. However, as this is not always recommended for the desired hairstyle, one can switch to a large-teeth comb. With this, the hair should be carefully untangled. At best, the hair should not be combed until it is at least 80 percent dry.
There are numerous care products that protect the hair for everyday use and also from blow-drying – such as hair cures and heat sprays that are sprayed or massaged into the hair after shampooing and are not washed out again. Most cures provide the hair with valuable moisture, which makes the hair look beautiful and shiny despite the blow-dry air. Heat sprays, on the other hand, protect it from heat by enveloping and protecting it. The latter should be used especially when the hair is dried and styled at higher temperatures.

What useful accessories are there for the hair dryer?

To make the use of a Föhn even more flexible, the units can be equipped with various accessories. Here above all different attachments for the hair dryer have to be named. In technical terminology, this is a diffuser that provides different air turbulence and accordingly dries the hair faster or simplifies the styling of the hair.

Some models also offer faster drying and styling in one step at the same time. First of all a longish or a round diffuser should be named. With these products, the air jet can either be concentrated or distributed. But there are also particularly narrow attachments. These make it possible, among other things, to blow-dry under the hair and thus style it up. The respective attachment can simply be plugged on to change it again at any time fast.

Accordingly, it is easier to blow-dry certain areas on the head or to dry the hair over a large area. There is also diffuser for curls and more volume in the hair. These products look like a kind of brush where the warm Föhn air is blown through the thicker “bristles” of the brush. This in turn means that the hairs are first dried directly on the scalp and thus, in principle, are blow-dried from bottom to top. Thus the hair is not pressed down by the Föhn-air, but is set up, which provides for the larger volume. In addition, these attachments massage the scalp, which can improve blood circulation. The diffuser is available in different versions, for example with longer “bristles” or in the shape of a human hand. In addition, these attachments usually fit without problems on all modern hair dryers.

Another accessory product are extension cords or adapters for the power connection. Extension cables ensure that the hairdryer can also be used if, for example, a greater distance between the bathroom mirror and the next socket has to be bridged. As an example the use of the hair dryer in a swimming pool can be named. Depending on how many people use the mirror and sockets at the same time, it may be useful to use an extension cord to facilitate hair drying.

The adapters, however, ensure that the hairdryer can also be used in the sockets of other countries during holidays without any problems. The adapter simply has to be plugged into the socket of the holiday destination in order to connect the Föhnthen with the plug from Germany. These adapters can usually be purchased as a complete set to easily use the sockets in any country.

Also to be mentioned with the adapters are plugs for the cigarette lighter of a car. In this way it is possible, for example, to use the hair dryer in a car or caravan without any problems when camping. It is only important to know that in this case a lower performance can be expected, so that the blow-drying process can take longer.

The third accessory to be named first of all are bathroom mounting brackets for the hairdryer. These brackets are screwed or glued to the wall in the bathroom so that the hairdryer can be safely hung up here. The advantage here is that the hair dryer takes up less space in the bathroom and can always be reached easily. These holders are of course available in different designs to find the right fastening for every hair dryer. Furthermore, the purchase of a transport bag for the hair dryer is also possible. With this product, the devices can be transported safely, which makes sense especially during holidays.

In addition, the bags often offer enough space for accessories such as attachments or socket adapters. Thus the complete accessories for the hair dryer can be transported easily and above all safely together.

Useful accessories

Most hairdryers bring useful accessories such as hairdryer attachments, diffusers and more. Especially bar-shaped hair dryers are true all-rounders and even have curling irons or straightening attachments as accessories. The selection and also the extensive offer are here quite large and it depends fundamentally only on the present model and on the manufacturer. Some accessories are included with the hair dryers, other accessories can optionally be purchased in specialist shops or directly from the manufacturer.

However, it is important that the accessories are really suitable for the hair dryer at hand – because most of the time the attachments do not fit on every model. Screw connections and also the diameters of these are mostly too different – and this often even within special product lines.

One of the two most popular attachment types is the hairdryer nozzle. This is available in different sizes depending on the model, but it usually looks very similar and has one goal: it is beak-shaped and bundles the air through its shape to a specific point. The size of this area depends on the diameter of the opening. A hairdryer nozzle allows certain areas of the hair to be hairdryed and thus better dried, warmed or cooled and thus fixed – such as the pony area or individual hair strands. Thus this attachment is usually more suitable for styling than for drying the hair and is also intended.

The is often called an air shower because of its appearance: This is because it is a wide, plate-like attachment with several openings and rods on the front. With the help of the diffuser the hair can be dried particularly gently, since the air is distributed here and blown out on larger area. This will reduce the amount of hair whirling, which is desirable depending on the hairstyle or hair structure. However, the diffuser is also particularly popular with people with curls, as they can be brought into shape with the help of the attachment and can be dried at the same time.

How does regular use of a hair dryer affect the environment?

Probably the most important point when using a hairdryer is the actual power consumption. As already mentioned, with an output between 1,000 watts and 2,500 watts, a power consumption of 65 kW per year can be expected if the Föhn is used every day. This electricity consumption is roughly comparable to the annual consumption of an iron or an efficient refrigerator.
It is important to know that around 30 percent of electricity consumption can be saved if energy-efficient hair dryers are used or a towel is used manually for hair drying. Depending on the outside temperature, it may not always be necessary to use such a hair dryer. In summer, for example, the hair can also dry quickly in the fresh air. In any case, it makes sense for the environment to use the Föhn only rarely or for a short time.

It should also be mentioned that the Öko-Institut has drawn up a life cycle assessment for the hairdryers. These can be used to compare the environmental impacts from the manufacture of the equipment to its use and disposal. The balance was extrapolated for a hair dryer, which is used regularly for 4 years. The results are given both in terms of cumulative energy consumption (CER) and CO² emissions. It was possible to determine that around 67 percent of the environmental impact is caused by the use of the hair dryer. This corresponds to a value of around 187 CO² emissions.

Production and disposal, on the other hand, are comparatively low in the test. The reason for this is that modern materials and processes are used in these processes, which produce correspondingly little CO². This life cycle assessment again suggests that the greatest potential can be found in the use of the Föhn in order to protect the environment.

The third environmental aspect should be the disposal itself. Every year, people produce millions of tons of electronic scrap, which has to be disposed of extensively. Especially some materials, which are sometimes also processed in the hair dryer, can damage the environment.

Therefore, the hair dryer should be used for as long as possible without choosing a new model every two years. With the correct care and treatment of the device, it can be expected that the Föhn can be used without problems for 5 to 10 years. Many of the modern hair dryers have a warranty of 2 to 5 years, so that these devices can be repaired promelos in this time, instead of being disposed of. However, if a new hair dryer is purchased during this time, it is more environmentally friendly to sell or give away the old model instead of throwing it away. In this way, the amount of electrical waste can be reduced.

In addition, it makes sense to choose a product that carries the “Blue Angel”. This badge can usually be found on the packaging or a sticker directly on the hair dryer. This symbol indicates that the product is environmentally friendly and can also be disposed of if necessary. Important aspects that the hairdryer fulfills when carrying the “Blue Angel” are:

  • Low power consumption at high drying rates
  • Low noise emissions (max. 80 dB)
  • Use of low-pollutant materials
  • High safety when used
  • High service life determined by endurance testing
  • guarantee of at least 2 years

Thus, this seal is a very good indicator of which hair dryer causes the least damage to the environment. It is also important to know during disposal that the hair dryers should not simply be thrown into the “yellow bag”. It is better to visit a recycling centre and hand in the Föhn as electrical waste. Although this process takes some time, it can be completed completely free of charge. This also ensures that the hair dryer is disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way possible. As an alternative to disposal, there are also workshops where defective hair dryers can be repaired under professional supervision. This means that they do not have to be disposed of, but can still be used after a defect.

Alternatives to the hair dryer

Since hair dryers are now also available in rod form and with various attachments as a curling iron or universal styling device, this is probably one of the most popular alternatives – so a curling iron or styling iron, which does not work with pure heat, but with warm air. The prerequisite here, however, is that the rod as such can also be used without a curling or straightening attachment and that the hair can be blow-dried directly.

However, most of these bars are less powerful than a conventional hair dryer because they are less for the purpose of drying and more for the purpose of styling. This means that they usually work at higher temperatures and with a less strong air flow.

Conventional curling irons or straightening iron are popular alternatives when it comes to hair styling. Normally, they work today with metal or ceramic surfaces that heat up. This allows the hair to be brought into the desired shape – i.e. laid into curls or straightened. Sometimes the styling process can be made easier and faster with a curling iron or straightening iron than with a hairdryer and a suitable brush – especially because only one hand is needed to hold the device. For the pure drying of the hair devices are suitable, which work exclusively with heat but not.
